Optical OFDM-based Data Center Networks

چکیده
Cloud computing and web emerging application has created the need for more powerful data centers with high performance interconnection networks. Current data center networks, based on electronic packet switches, will not be able to satisfy the required communication bandwidth of emerging applications without consuming excessive power. Optical interconnects have gained attention recently as a promising solution offering high throughput, low latency and reduced energy consumption compared to current networks based on commodity switches. This paper presents a novel architecture for data center networks based on optical OFDM using Wavelength Selective Switches (WSS). The OFDM-based solution provides high throughput, reduced latency and fine grain bandwidth allocation. A heuristic algorithm for the bandwidth allocation is presented and evaluated in terms of utilization. The power analysis shows that the proposed scheme is almost 60% more energy efficient compared to the current networks based on commodity switches.

Green optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing networks
Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been proposed as an enabling technique for elastic optical networks to support heterogeneous traffic demands by enabling rate and modulation adaptive bandwidth allocation. The authors investigate the energy efficiency of optical OFDM-based networks. A mixed integer linear programming model is developed to minimise the total power consumption...

— Wireless networks have quickly become part of everyday life. Wireless LANs, cell phone networks, and personal area networks are just a few examples of widely used wireless networks. However, wireless devices are range and data rate limited. The research community has spent a great deal of effort on finding ways to overcome these limitations. In other words, high Data-Rate wireless access is d...
متن کاملDesign and performance evaluation of an OpenFlow-based control plane for software-defined elastic optical networks with direct-detection optical OFDM (DDO-OFDM) transmission.
Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (O-OFDM), which transmits high speed optical signals using multiple spectrally overlapped lower-speed subcarriers, is a promising candidate for supporting future elastic optical networks. In contrast to previous works which focus on Coherent Optical OFDM (CO-OFDM), in this paper, we consider the direct-detection optical OFDM (DDO-OFDM) as the t...

In the context of next-generation optical access networks beyond 10 G, for high SE and flexible dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA), the scheme of hybrid 64/16/4QAM-OFDM signal for downlink transmission and hybrid 16/8/QPSK-OFDM signal for uplink transmission is successfully proposed and experimentally presented in a full-duplex PON based on OFDM system. Here, for the uplink, in order to unit ma...
متن کاملCoded-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing in hybrid optical networks
Future Internet should be able to support a wide range of services containing large amount of multimedia over different network types at a high speed. The future optical networks will therefore be hybrid, composed of different single-mode fibre (SMF), multi-mode fibre (MMF) and free-space optical (FSO) links. In these networks, novel modulation and coding techniques are needed that are capable ...
